Guideline IX: Education Supplement Guidelines
San Jacinto College recognizes the need for employees to improve their job knowledge and skills. To reward employees who choose to further their education, non-teaching employees may receive a supplement for degrees received from regionally accredited institutions of higher education which are beyond the minimum educational job requirements for their position. The educational salary supplement is contingent upon receipt by Human Resources of official transcripts directly from the degree-granting institution. Educational supplements are one-time payments and do not become part of the base salary. The college will pay a supplement only when the employee receives the next highest degree above the minimum requirements for their position. Non-teaching employees hired after September 1, 2001 will be paid an education stipend for the next highest degree beyond the minimum educational job requirements for their position when the degree is earned after the date of hire.
- When the minimum requirements for a position are up to and including a high school diploma, a $1,500 supplement is awarded for receipt of an associate's degree.
- When the minimum requirements for a position are an associate's degree a $2,000 supplement is awarded for the bachelor's degree.
- When the minimum requirements for a position are a bachelor's degree, a $2,500 supplement is awarded for the master's degree.
- When the minimum requirements for a position are a master's degree, a $3,000 supplement is awarded for the doctoral degree.
For current employees, a supplement for educational achievement will be processed following receipt of official transcripts documenting the degree attained. Official transcripts must be received by Human Resources directly from the institution granting the credit by the published payroll cut-off date in September of each year.
Employees anticipating receiving a degree from an accredited institution and thus qualifying for an education supplement in future years should advise the appropriate supervisor during the budget planning process for the next fiscal year. In order to qualify for an education supplement, transcripts must be received by Human Resources by the published payroll cut-off date in September in order to be processed for that fiscal year. Transcripts received after the September payroll cut-off date will be processed effective the next fiscal year.
*For administrators only - Education stipends may be awarded for administrators employed prior to September 1997 for a doctorate degree earned after September 1997. Administrators employed after September 1997 are not eligible for education stipends. Staff employed prior to 1997 and receiving pay for a doctorate as part of base salary are ineligible for education stipends.
