6 softball players receive NJCAA honors

HOUSTON – Six San Jacinto College softball players were recently named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIV South Conference award winners.

Sophomore pitcher Brooke DuBois (Pearland / Pearland HS) was awarded second-team all-conference honors. This season, DuBois had a 2.45 ERA and 98 strikeouts. DuBois also hit .338 with 11 doubles, four home runs, and 31 RBI. In December 2012, DuBois signed with the University of Houston-Victoria to continue education and softball career.

Freshman pitcher Karri Smith (Alvin / Alvin HS) was also named to the all-conference second team. Smith had a 2.16 ERA, 104 strikeouts, while hitting .308 on the season. Freshman outfielder Courtney Sams (Pearland / Pearland HS) received first-team all-conference and second-team all-region honors. Sams also had a great rookie season hitting a team-best .443, with two doubles, one triple, 20 RBI, and 33 stolen bases.

Freshmen infielders Raven Keeler (Alvin / Alvin HS) and Loren Donaldson (Alvin / Alvin HS), and freshman utility, Sarah Ragsdale (Orange / West Orange-Stark HS), received first-team all-conference and first-team all-region honors. Keeler hit .381 with eight home runs, 15 doubles, one triple, 33 RBI, and seven stolen bases. Donaldson hit .345 with 16 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 57 RBI. Ragsdale was .414 on the season behind 11 doubles, four triples, 33 RBI, and 11 stolen bases. Ragsdale was also named the 2012 – 2013 San Jacinto College South Campus Student-Athlete of the Year.

The San Jacinto College softball team finished the season with an overall record of 40 – 25, 18 – 6 in conference play. Earlier this year, the team signed eight players for the 2014 season: Katy Potter, utility (New Caney / New Caney HS); Bridget Stein, pitcher (Brenham / Brenham HS); Elizabeth Garcia, outfielder (League City / Clear Springs HS); Kayla Deselle, utility (Dickinson / Dickson HS); Brigitte Gavin, catcher (Manitoba / College Louis Riel, Canada); Carah Nunez, catcher (Houston / St. Pius X HS); Marti Delgado, utility (Baytown / Goose Creek Memorial HS); and Mekaela Karst, catcher and utility (Sweeny / Sweeny HS).
