HOUSTON – Students in the San Jacinto College education program treated children at the South Campus children’s center to a “Happy Birthday America” party.

Students put together several Fourth of July activities, which included a science station to make gak; a crafts station to make a red, white, and blue windsock; and a relay race and freeze dance games. Facilitating the activities with the kids was the best part for education students Jennifer Robles and Erika Gonzalez.

“I had a teacher that really impacted my life, and I want to do the same for someone else,” said Robles, who was majoring in chemical engineering before switching to education. “I just took a step back and really reevaluated everything. I decided the best way to make a change is to be the change. I hope I can make a difference for my future students and one day have one come back and say, ‘You really changed my life Ms. Robles.’ That’s one of the best things you can ever hear,” said the aspiring high school English teacher.

Before pursuing teaching, Gonzalez was working as a medical assistant when she decided her heart was in elementary education. “Even at an early age, they need to know someone is there to support them,” said Gonzalez. “I want to help them build a foundation that they can rely on to achieve their goals.”

The San Jacinto College education program offers students an associate of applied science in child development/early childhood education, associate of arts in teaching, and other teaching certificates and marketable skills awards.
