PASADENA, Texas – The San Jacinto College Foundation was recently featured as a 2013 Halliburton Hometown Hero, a popular community program sponsored by the Houston Texans in partnership with Halliburton.

The Foundation, which raises funds for San Jacinto College student scholarships and student success initiatives, was nominated as a Hometown Hero by Hollie Fulsom, San Jacinto College event planner. “I nominated the San Jacinto College Foundation because I have had a firsthand view of all of the lives they have changed in our community by helping students afford an education,” commented Fulsom (aka Texan Hollie because of her enthusiastic support of the Texans). “The work the Foundation does gives students more opportunities to work hard and achieve their educational goals and become positive contributors to our community.”

In the Hometown Hero program, people nominated local charities that go above and beyond to make the community a better place to live and work. The top 10 finalist charities were determined by a vote count from supporters. Featured online and in the game day program, the finalists also received air time on the Houston Texans Radio program on Sports Radio 610 AM.

During the radio spot, Ruth Keenan, executive director of the San Jacinto College Foundation, explained how the Foundation strives always to be a true hometown hero. “San Jacinto College helps an under-served part of the community,” she commented. “About 74 percent of our student enrollment includes people who are first in their families to attend college. Foundation scholarships help students – not just dream about college, but make that dream a reality. As future leaders and skilled workforce, they enrich the community, and end up giving back.”
