HOUSTON – With a 5-3 win over Alvin Community College on Sunday, March 30, 2014, San Jacinto College Softball Head Coach Kelly Saenz notched her 400th career win.
“While my name and record are associated with the win, it’s really about my team and their accomplishments on and off the field,” said Saenz, who is in her 11th season as the San Jacinto College head coach. “I could not have gotten to this point without the hard work and dedication of not only this team, but past teams as well.”
Since Saenz took over the San Jac softball program in 2004, her teams have gone 398-230 overall. In 2008, for the first time in school history, her squad finished fourth in the nation at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament. That season also earned her coaching staff the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award for the Midwest Region.
Earlier this year, Saenz was announced as a 2014 inductee into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame. As a member of the 1994 – 1996 Smitty’s Midget teams, Saenz won three national championships before signing a letter of intent to play at Eastern Kentucky University. In 1998, Saenz was named the Ohio Valley Conference player of the year. Her coaching career began at Frank Phillips College, where she was 3-20 during the 2003 season.
Throughout her San Jacinto College coaching career, Saenz has had 33 players receive All-Region honors, 26 All-Conference players, 1 All-Region MVP, 19 NFCA All-Midwest Region selections, nine NFCA All-Americans, and two players named to the World Series All-Tournament Team. In addition, 43 of her players have gone on to sign National Letters of Intent to play at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) colleges and universities.
This season, Saenz has had the San Jacinto College team nationally ranked for much of the season. The team was ranked as high as fourth – the highest regular season ranking in school history – and currently sits at 14th with an overall record of 30-16.
