Coastal Bend College (CBC) has recently named San Jacinto College South Campus Dean of Enrollment Services, Dr. Kerry Mix, as its 2014 CBC Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
Earlier this Spring, Dr. Mix was chosen as the first alumnus to be featured in CBC’s community newsletter, “CBC Forum.”
“Community colleges foster success,” said Dr. Mix in CBC Forum on the stereotypical characterization of community colleges. “We are not a revolving door. We care about access, success, and quality. We are holding ourselves to higher standards. Our degree and completion rates are increasing every year. We need people to be a part of college - it will then become a true ‘community’ college.”
Shortly after the publication was distributed, Dr. Mix was notified that he was the 2014 CBC Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Established last year, the CBC Distinguished Alumni Award aims to highlight CBC alumni that have gone on to achieve great things in their respective fields. As this year’s recipient, he will also be the commencement speaker at the CBC Spring 2014 commencement ceremony.
“I hope to reach the students with my story about how making the right connections helped me attain my goals,” said Dr. Mix. “The challenge I will present to them is to embrace the social responsibility they have as graduates to leave a legacy of service in their community, families, and work.”
Dr. Mix received an Associate of Applied Science in Electronic Servicing from CBC in 2001. Afterward, he attained a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science in Computer Information Systems and a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston- Victoria. During this time, he returned to CBC as a faculty member, teaching consumer electronics and computer repair in the electronics department for five years. He then went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin’s Community College Leadership Program with a Doctorate in Educational Administration.
