San Jacinto College softball welcomes Challenger Little League

Andrea Vasquez -- April 1, 2013

HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College softball team will host the League City Little League Challenger Division Heroes and Astros for a buddy softball game on Saturday, April 6, in between games during a double header against Coastal Bend Community College.

Challenger Baseball was designed to teach students with cognitive and physical disabilities the basic skills and rules of baseball. Challenger leagues are open to boys and girls, ages 5-18, who have disabilities that may prevent them from participating in a mainstream Little League program. The Challenger program allows them to be a part of a team, develop social skills, and build self-esteem. According to Little League Baseball, more than 30,000 children participate in more than 90,000 Challenger Divisions worldwide.

“We decided to participate in this event because it is a great experience for the student-athletes to give back to the community in a different way,” said softball Head Coach Kelly Saenz. “It allows the student-athletes to experience a different side of softball and work with a special group of kids that play for the pure love of the game.”

Between the softball games, members of the San Jacinto College softball team will each pair with a member of the League City Challenger Heroes and Astros to hit balls, run the bases, and catch in the infield and outfield. KKHH Hot 95.7 FM will broadcast live during the buddy softball game. Cody the Coyote, the South Campus mascot, will also make an appearance, and snacks will be available.

“We work hard every day playing the game we love and chasing our dreams, so getting to help the kids achieve theirs is a rewarding experience,” said freshman Sarah Ragsdale (Orange / West Orange - Stark HS). “To me personally, it's a pleasure to be able to work with these extraordinary kids. I can speak for everyone on the team when I say it warms our hearts to see the kids smiling while playing.”

The San Jacinto College softball double header against Coastal Bend Community College starts at 4 p.m., with the League City Challenger Heroes and Astros buddy softball game starting at approximately 5 p.m. All games will be held at the San Jacinto College South Campus softball fields, located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston.
