TPEG scholarships available for CNA and medical office certification courses

Eligible scholarship recipients can receive almost $2,000 in health care training

PASADENA, Texas – Need-based scholarships from the Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) are available for certification courses in Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and medical office professional.

The CNA course, valued at $1,930, starts on Oct. 2 and ends on Dec. 7, meeting Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., on the San Jacinto College Central Campus. This course includes some additional Saturday hours with clinicals scheduled in eight-hour intervals. The CNA course teaches the skills, knowledge and abilities to care for residents of long-term care facilities. After completion of the class, participants will be eligible to take the State of Texas Certified Nurse Aide Certification Exam.

The Medical Office Professional course, valued at $1,399, starts on Sept. 6 and ends on Dec. 13, meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., on the San Jacinto College Central Campus. This course includes two Saturday class meetings. Participants learn about working in a medical office setting, basic office procedures, medical records administration, medical terminology and pathophysiology. This course is the prerequisite course for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Medical Coding Curriculum for Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Certification.

Basic eligibility for TPEG scholarships includes a demonstrated financial need. In addition, the applicant must be at least 18 years of age and have no student loan defaults or prior balance due to San Jacinto College. Scholarships are limited in number and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must complete the 2017-2018 Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). Some courses may require specific prerequisites such as a high school diploma, GED, negative TB screening and a background check.
