PASADENA, Texas –  The San Jacinto College volleyball team recently visited the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, where the players delivered approximately 160 holiday cards to the veterans.

The team visited with patients in the eye clinic, emergency care waiting area, lobby, pharmacy, the hospice and spinal trauma section. Head Coach and Central Campus Athletic Director, Sharon Nelson, said the volunteer experience is one that the players will never forget.

"This visit was very moving," said Nelson. "Many of the veterans were happy to have visitors and told us stories of their lives and of their military service."

One veteran told the group about his first deployment to Spain, in which freshman middle blocker Ana Helena Ribeiro of Portugal shared her knowledge of the neighboring country. "How his smile brightened to have someone who knew what he was describing," said Nelson.

"The veterans are forever in our hearts, and something so small as a card and smile seemed to have made a gigantic impact on their day. We will never forget it and will absolutely visit again."
