With seven innings of solid pitching, freshman pitcher Kelsey McClain helped the San Jacinto College women’s softball team to a first-round victory in the 2008 Region XIV softball tournament.
BRENHAM, Texas – The San Jacinto College women’s softball team defeated Paris Junior College (PJC) 8-2 during the first round of the 2008 Region XIV softball tournament. With a rally in the bottom of the third inning, San Jac never looked back and slowly wore down PJC on both sides of the field.
Kelsey McClain (Pasadena, Texas / Memorial High School) pitched a complete game and got the win for San Jac (34-15) with seven strikeouts and two earned runs over seven innings. PJC drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Dragons were not able to recover from the solid pitching from McClain.
Offensively, San Jac went on a hitting spree in the bottom of the third inning bringing in three runs. They re-ignited their hitting in the bottom of the fourth driving in five. Freshman Krystal Plummer (Angleton, Texas / Angleton High School) was two-for-three and drove in one run, while McClain also went two-for-three, driving in a run and scoring one. Sophomore Brittany Boren (Bryan, Texas / Bryan High School), San Jac’s top hitter, drove in two runs and was two-of-three on the day.
San Jac advances to the second round, and will face Texarkana at 9 a.m., Friday, May 2, 2008, at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas. The winner of the Region XIV tournament advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament May 15-17, 2008, in Plant City, Florida.
