Volleyball opens season 4-0 with sweeps of Galveston, Panola, Coastal Bend and No. 5 Blinn

Amanda Booren - 8/25/2008 San Jacinto College volleyball opened the season 4-0 at the San Jacinto College Volleyball Invitational Tournament.

PASADENA, Texas – The San Jacinto College volleyball team opened the 2008 season with straight-set sweeps of Galveston College, Panola College, Coastal Bend Community College and fifth-ranked Blinn at the San Jacinto College Volleyball Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday at Anders Gymnasium.

In the first match of the season, San Jac swept rival Galveston 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16) behind newcomer Zuzana Cizova’s (Zlin, Czech Republic) 13 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Julia Teixiera (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) had 10 kills in the win.

Sophomore Bruna Rocha (Sao Paulo, Brazil) made her mark in the record books, hitting .735 for the match, a mark that ranks seventh all-time in hitting percentage for a single match. San Jac easily defeated Coastal Bend 3-0 (25-7, 25-5, 25-4).

The nightcap pitted San Jac against Panola College. SJC received a solid effort from freshman Moana Masaniai (Waipahu, Hawaii). Masaniai hit .500, while Cizova hit .480, as San Jac again won 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-16).

San Jac defeated No. 5 Blinn on Saturday 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22). Rookie setter Abbey Parker (Houston / J. Frank Dobie HS) had 34 assists, seven digs, a block and a service ace for SJC. Rocha continued her stellar play, knocking down 17 kills, while newcomer Cizova had 15 kills and nine digs. Cizova finished the weekend hitting .415, and averaged 4.08 kills per game. Her 77 digs in four matches averaged 6.42 per game.

Up next for San Jac is the Blinn College Labor Day Classic in Brenham. Participating teams include Blinn, San Jac, Wharton, Temple and Jarvis Christian.
