PASADENA, Texas – The San Jacinto College volleyball team will host a Dig Pink match benefitting breast cancer awareness on Friday, October 24, 2008, at 6 p.m., against Coastal Bend Community College.
The team, ranked seventh in the nation, will participate in the national Side-Out Foundation’s Dig Pink rally, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Both teams and coaches will don pink during the match, and a moment of silence will be held prior to the start in honor of survivors and those who are battling the disease, as well as those who have lost their fight with breast cancer.
"One of the more popular referees, Emily Strickland, passed away a year and a half ago from breast cancer," said San Jac head coach Sharon Nelson. “We wanted a way to honor her and others who have lost their battle with the disease, along with all of the survivors, and to add our thoughts and prayers to those enduring the fight right now."
The team will accept donations at the door, and a portion of the proceeds from concessions sold will be donated to help breast cancer research. The first 25 fans to make at least a $5 donation will receive a free t-shirt, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match. All proceeds and donations will benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a national 501 (c)(3) organization.
To date, over 760 college and high school teams from around the country have committed to helping fight breast cancer by participating in the Dig Pink initiative. To make a donation online, or for more information about the Side-Out Foundation, please visit www.side-out.org.
San Jac currently owns a 22-2 overall record and is undefeated in conference play. SJC is led by sophomore Bruna Rocha (São Paulo Brazil) who is hitting .327 behind a team-leading 320 kills.
All matches are played in Anders Gymnasium on the Central campus located at 8060 Spencer Highway in Pasadena. For information about San Jacinto College volleyball, visit www.sanjacsports.com.
