Volleyball advances to conference title match with sweep of Wharton

LAREDO, Texas –San Jacinto College volleyball defeated Wharton County Junior College 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-11) Friday night to advance to the Region XIV title match Saturday afternoon at Maravillo Gymnasium on the campus of Laredo Community College.

Led by its trio of outside hitters, San Jac (29-2) was too much for Wharton. Sophomore ZuzanaCizova (Zlin, Czech Republic) knocked down 16 kills, and added 11 digs for her 21stdouble-double of the season. Fellow classmates Julia Teixeira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Bruna Rocha (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Rocha added 15 digs.

Freshman setter Abbey Parker (Houston / Dobie High School), who leads the nation in assists per game with a 13.3 per game average, had 45 in Friday’s match.

With the win, San Jac will face host Laredo for the conference title. Laredo defeated Lee College 3-0 in the tournament’s second semifinal match. First serve is slated for2 p.m., on Saturday. The winner advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament November 20-22 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

San Jac has won the last three Region XIV titles, and finished last season sixth at the national tournament.
