Engineering with Duct Tape

Do you believe duct tape can be used for everything? Love to design and build things? This is the camp for you!

Using Tinker Toys, Duct tape, K’Nex, recycled materials, Mentos, rubber bands, Legos, balloons and lots of imagination campers will experience the ultimate science summer camp exploring Rockets – Robots – Roller coasters and Race cars!  Are you interested in designing and building?  Do you enjoy problem solving?  Do you believe duct tape can be used for everything?  This is the camp for you!  Students in grades 3rd – 5th grade will explore the fun side of engineering and the joy of DUCT TAPE!  Everyone receives a camp T-shirt and a summer to remember.

Houston’s largest annual FREE family festival showcasing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), Energy Day has nearly 70 interactive demonstrations and exhibits teaching students and their families about the various forms of energy, science, technology, efficiency, conservation, and careers in the energy industry. The exciting exhibits and interactions with energy experts help spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

We will be hosting Dr. David Lubaroff, Principal Investigator on an NIH funded CURE Cancer Research Summer Training Program. He will be traveling from the University of Iowa and visiting partner institutions which include San Jacinto College. I would like to invite you to a meet-and-greet breakfast to welcome him to our college. This is a great opportunity for Dr. Lubaroff to see firsthand the seriousness with which we approach STEM education. Having all of the Natural Science Chairs, STEM Council chair and campus coordinators, Academic Deans and administrators present will be very valuable. I hope you can make it. This is a unique opportunity for our students to conduct research over the summer (all expenses paid plus stipend) at The University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Space Day will take place on March 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the science building, Building C-19, on the Central Campus. This San Jacinto College Aerospace Academy event will connect students interested in the STEM fields to representatives from NASA and workforce industry leaders. Information will be provided on internships and scholarships, and networking opportunities will be available. There will be food and door prizes. San Jacinto College hosts these Communities in Schools STEM Expos for the organization's afterschool program. Oct. 20 STEM Expo will be held on the Central Campus, Nov. 3 on the North Campus, and Nov. 17 on the South Campus.

STEM Survivor Camp

Can your tribe outwit, out-build, outplay and outmaneuver the other tribes? Do you have the skills to adapt to your STEM surroundings while making friends?  This is the place to be this summer!

Be one of the STEM Ship castaways that are marooned on the SJC Island of fun this summer.  You will be split into tribes where you will be challenged to compete in contests such as building a running vehicle with only household items, constructing a JudoBot, creating a Rube Goldberg machine or walking on water.  Students in grades 6th – 8th will participate in fun activities that encourage STEM learning through fun adventures.  Everyone receives a camp T-shirt and a summer to remember.

Ages: 11-13

Cost: $125

Time: 8:30 am-4 pm
