Return of Title IV Funds
Students receiving federal monies to fund their college education are subject to the federal regulation requiring the student (and parent in the case of a PLUS loan) and/or institution to repay any unearned portion of the funds awarded to the student (and parent) if the student completely withdraws, officially or unofficially from their classes prior to completing more than 60% of the term and parts of term in which they enrolled.
The federal funds that are subject to “Return to Title IV (R2T4)” are the Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Leveraging Education Assistance Program (LEAP), Special Leveraging Educational Assistance Program (SLEAP), Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and Parent Loans for Undergraduate Studies (PLUS).
Official withdrawal occurs when the student completes the withdrawal process over the web, by telephone response system or through the Registrar's Office. The student is considered to have officially withdrawn from San Jacinto College when the student drops or is dropped from all remaining courses not previously dropped during the term. After the student is completely officially withdrawn, the SJC Financial Aid Services Office recalculates the student's aid and notifies the student at the address on file in the Admissions Office of any indebtedness created by the complete official withdrawal.
The federal regulations consider any student who fails to successfully complete any course during the term to have unofficially withdrawn. After grades are posted at the end of the term, SJC Financial Aid Services Office recalculates aid for any Title IV financial aid recipient who fails, during the term enrolled, to successfully complete any course. Since SJC is not required to take attendance and there is no official withdrawal date, the mid point of the student's enrollment must be used as the effective date of the complete withdrawal. Notification is sent to the student at the address on file in the Enrollment Services Office.
If the student owes the Department of Education, the ability to participate in any federal funds at any school will be lost until the debt is repaid or acceptable repayment arrangements are made with the National Payment Center of the Department of Education. SJC will assign any debt due to the Department of Education to its overpayment collection process. Funds owed to SJC are subject to SJC collection procedures.
Federal regulations are subject to change without notice.
Once tuition and fees are paid, you are considered officially registered until you complete the semester or officially withdraw. A withdrawal request becomes official and effective the date it is completed on-line, through the voice response system, or received in the Enrollment Services Office Office, regardless of the date the student last attended class and even if the student never attended class. However, students who have never attended class are not eligible for financial aid funds. Student must submit withdrawal requests electronically or in writing on forms from the Enrollment Services Office. See Official Withdrawals discussed in the catalog.
You are urged to take class enrollment and attendance seriously. Consider the amount of time required to successfully complete a class and plan the number of hours in which you enroll. If need be, officially withdraw from your class(es) rather than ceasing attendance.
