There must be at least one major exam in addition to the final exam (see the syllabus guidelines), but an instructor is not required to give a mid-semester exam. In order to ensure some comparability of course requirements, the college stipulates that, although instructors are not required to give mid-semester exams, they are to schedule an examination or other assignment by the middle of the semester as a way of helping students understand their progress in a course.
