Department of Veterans Affairs announces emergency education benefits

PASADENA, Texas – In an effort to alleviate financial burdens facing many students, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced today further outreach to Veteran students eligible for a special emergency payment of their education benefits.

Beginning today, Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, Veteran students who have applied for their educational benefits, but have not yet received their GI Bill payment, will be able to apply online for on-the-spot emergency payments up to $3,000.

PASADENA, Texas – The Continuing and Professional Development (CPD) division of San Jacinto College is offering a free information session about the Alternative Teacher Certification program, which provides the opportunity to become a certified teacher in the state of Texas.

Variety of musical performances set for October

San Jacinto College Central’s music department will present a variety of choral and musical concerts during October that promise to offer something for every type of music aficionado.

All performances are free, and open to the public, and will take place in the Jan Corbin Recital Hall, located inside the Monte Blue Music Building, 8060 Spencer Hwy. in Pasadena. The concert schedule includes:

Low-cost pet vaccinations to be offered at San Jacinto College South on Oct. 3

HOUSTON – Pet owners may bring their dog or cat to the San Jacinto College South campus for low-cost vaccinations on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The event, in honor of World Rabies Day 2009, will be held from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. in rooms 1117 and 1114 of the campus’ administration building.

Preliminary numbers show enrollment jump at San Jacinto College

PASADENA, Texas – Preliminary enrollment numbers indicate an increase in San Jacinto College students this Fall.

An approximate 10 percent increase has been reported from across the district in student enrollment, as well as an approximate 14 percent increase in funded technical education contact hours and an 8.5 percent increase in funded academic contact hours.

San Jacinto College South showcases faculty art

HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College South Faculty Art Show is currently on display through Oct. 15 in the Parker Williams Library. The exhibit includes artwork by Martin Wnuk, Christina Potts, Ann Wood, Dixon Bennett, Sharon Lareau, Mark Schatz, Marie Valdez, Brian Piana, Kartik Trivedi, Larry Horn and Theresa Goodwin.

Social networking topic of Small Business Development Center’s workshop

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at San Jacinto College will offer a training workshop that explores the business advantages of social networking.

“The Ins and Outs of Social Networking” will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the SBDC’s new Pearland office, located at 6117 Broadway (inside the Pearland Chamber of Commerce Center).

SJC softball team dedicate Fall season to friend with cancer

HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College (SJC) softball team is trading in their blue and white jerseys for pink Team Gabby T-shirts this Fall in honor of Gabby Romero, their friend who is battling cancer.

SJC Students invited to audition for “Invent Yourself” ads

PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College will hold a casting call for the “Invent Yourself” online advertisements from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 28.

Auditions will be held in room 110 at the Central campus’ Interactive Learning Center. Three students will be chosen for the ads and flown to Albuquerque, NM for a one-day photo shoot, which also includes a $200 payment for photo usage.

No prior experience in acting or modeling is required.
