Donors help students through ‘Promise for Their Future’ scholarship campaign

PASADENA, Texas — San Jacinto College has launched a “Promise for Their Future” scholarship campaign to benefit students from East Harris County who wish to attend the College. To date, 12 donors have committed $75,000 to the campaign benefitting San Jacinto College students.

“Promise for Their Future” is a new scholarship opportunity for San Jacinto College students majoring in the arts and sciences. This fund will provide scholarships (tuition, fees, and books) to help up to 10 students complete their certificate or associate degree programs beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year.

“Our goal is to raise at least $250,000 to create a scholarship endowment so these funds are available to our students in perpetuity,”

commented Susan Arscott, Foundation Director and Vice President for Resource Development. The scholarship kick off will take place Friday, Jan. 22, as part of a private screening of the Houston Symphony’s performance of “The Planets – An HD Odyssey.” The Houston Symphony has commissioned celebrated producer/director Duncan Copp to assemble state-of-the-art, high definition images from NASA’s exploration of the solar system to accompany Holst’s exciting, cosmic musical score, along with commentary by the world’s leading planetary scientists.

“We are extremely grateful to the Houston Symphony and NASA for joining with us to provide an incredible symphony experience for our students, employees, guests and several students and employees from the local independent school districts working with the College,” added Arscott.

Donors to date include three at the $10,000 level: David and Marie Flickinger; Ben and Janice Meador; and, John and Rose Moon, Sr. Nine have committed to a $5,000 donation including: Bay Architects; Dell, Inc.; Rusty and Brenda Hellyer; LeTorneau University; McGriff, Seibels & Williams; Maureen Murphy (San Jacinto College South Campus President) and Joseph McArdle; Shell Oil; Daniel J. and Margaret K. Snooks; and, Verizon.

Donations for the “Promise for Their Future” campaign are being accepted through the San Jacinto College Foundation at the $5,000; $10,000; $25,000; and $50,000 level. Benefits include prime seat tickets for the Houston Symphony performance of “The Planets – An HD Odyssey” on Friday, Jan. 22, sponsorship of student tickets for the Symphony performance, and an ad in the event program. Donors will also be invited to attend an invitation-only pre-concert reception hosted by San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer.
