Central campus theatre department set to hold auditions for Spring musical

PASADENA, Texas – In response to Hurricane Ike last Fall, the San Jacinto College Central campus department of theatre and film moved its production of Disney’s “High School Musical” to February. Auditions were held previously, and those that auditioned will be allowed to keep their roles, but additional auditions will be held to fill the vacated parts.

Auditions for approximately 70 actors, singers and musicians will be held in the Slocomb Auditorium, located on the San Jacinto College Central campus, on January 14 and 15 at 6 p.m. Materials need not be prepared in advance, and anyone interested in auditioning should dress to move. Rehearsals for the show will begin January 20.

“The age range should be between 12 and adult, but because of the show, it really depends on height,” said Dr. Jerry Ivins, artistic director for the musical. “We encourage all that have an interest in theater to come out and audition.”

San Jacinto College musicals are typically large productions, often casting over 100 community members of varying theatrical experiences. In addition to the young adult roles, there are also several roles for adult-age actors. Auditions are open to anyone interested in participating, and no registration is needed.

Performances for “High School Musical” will be February 20, 21, 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. Special day matinee performances will be held for area schools and daycares on February 19 and 20 at 9:30 a.m., and February 27 at 10 a.m.

“High School Musical” is a story about two high school juniors from rival cliques – Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a beautiful and shy transfer student who excels in math and science. Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical, and as a result, divide the school. Despite other students’ attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella resist peer pressure and rivalry, inspiring others along the way not to “stick to the status quo.”
