San Jacinto College offers summer educational activities for school children

PASADENA, Texas – School is out, and that means it’s time to keep the children busy over the summer. San Jacinto College (SJC) offers a variety of summer camps, appropriate for children of all ages, to enhance their summer experience, while supporting academic curriculum. The following camps are being offered at the SJC North, South and Central campuses:
• San Jacinto College Robotics Camp
San Jacinto College Central will host three robotics camp sessions for students in various grade levels throughout July. Students in fifth and sixth grade may attend WeDoRobots from July 12-16 for an introduction to building LEGO robots. Eighth- and ninth-graders may attend RoboDogRobots from July 19-23 to learn how to build and program their own robotics dog that can meet challenges and demonstrate their skills on a dog agility course. Eighth-graders and high school students are invited to attend RexRobots from July 26-30 to program robots and create a humanoid-type robot.

• KidSpot Summer Camp
Theatre San Jacinto presents KidSpot Summer Camp for Youth 2010 from June 14 -18 and June 21- 25. This summer experience, for children ages 5 and older, will meet each session from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended times available. Participants will develop acting skills while participating in workshops that include movement, voice, theater games, improvisations, stage acting, film acting, character development and production. The daily rehearsals will culminate in a stage production of “School House Rock: LIVE!” at the end of each week.
KidSpot Summer Camp will be held at the San Jacinto College Central campus, located at 8060 Spencer Highway in Pasadena. Camp fee is $150; a few scholarships are available for applicants who qualify. Participants are asked to bring their lunch and snack. There will be a maximum of 50 students per session. • San Jacinto College 2010 Basketball Camp
Registration is now being accepted for the San Jacinto College 2010 basketball camp, a five-day event for boys and girls, age 7 through 18, to learn and improve their basketball skills. The first camp session is scheduled for Monday, July 19 through Friday, July 23. The second is from Monday, July 26 through Friday, July 30. Both sessions will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., in Anders Gymnasium on the San Jacinto College Central campus, located at 8060 Spencer Highway in Pasadena.
The camp will provide beginners with the basic fundamentals of the game, while helping more advanced players develop skills to a higher degree. The camp also provides an opportunity for participants to be challenged, and teach offense, defense and strategies for various game situations. Parents and friends will have a chance to watch the campers in action each Friday night of the two camp sessions. Camp cost is $90 per week, or $160 for both sessions.

• Math-Ready
San Jacinto College South will host Math-Ready from Aug. 2-6 for all area high school students. This camp is designed to prepare students for their upcoming math curriculum throughout their academic year and will include guest speakers, hands-on activities and tours of the NASA-Johnson Space Center. Texas Tech University and NASA will provide the content. Times are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Aug. 2-5, and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. Camp cost is $50 and includes lunch. • EnergyVenture Camp
Nine Energy Venture Camps will be offered this summer at all three San Jacinto College campuses. Students, ages 14 and older, are encouraged to apply for the camps, scheduled during the weeks of June 14-18, June 21-25 and July 12-16. Each week features three different camp themes and runs Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. EnergyVenture day camps focus on the energy and petrochemical industries, as well as science, technology, math and engineering. Camp curriculum includes hands-on activities, chemistry experiments, team building exercises, and field trips to energy companies, safety awareness, laboratory work, and industry panels.
Interested students are encouraged to apply online at www.energyventurecamp.org to receive a scholarship that covers all camp expenses, made possible by industry partners and the State of Texas. Please note that a very limited number of scholarships are available. Applications will be accepted until all scholarships are awarded. • San Jacinto College North Campus School-Age Summer Camp
Children, ages 5-11, may currently enroll in the SJC North Campus School-Age Summer Camp until Aug. 20. Camp goers are sure to keep busy with such weekly themes as music, drama, sports, arts and crafts, dance, and science. The camp will also feature occasional field trips throughout the summer months.
Camp times are from 6:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday at the North campus Children’s Center, located at 5800 Uvalde Road. Cost per week is $125, with a $25 registration fee and a $25 supply fee. For more information, call 281-459-7109.
