Construction beginning across all three San Jacinto College campuses

PASADENA, Texas – Construction to provide infrastructure and new academic facilities is underway on all three San Jacinto College (SJC) campuses pursuant to a $295 million bond referendum approved by voters in the College district two years ago.

In May 2008, 71 percent of voters in the San Jacinto College Community College District approved the capital improvement bond program to construct hands-on instructional science, allied health, and other technical education facilities at each of the three SJC campuses. In addition, plans are under development for renovations of libraries and physical education facilities, as well as changes in the student support services area to create a single location for students to access services that support student learning.

“We have all of the general contractors in place for the first phase of the bond program construction, and the infrastructure work has already started,” said Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities and Construction, Bryan Jones, who is overseeing the bond construction. “We are working diligently with personnel on each campus and with our project teams to ensure that this bond program will provide the greatest benefit to our community.”

There are three phases to the bond construction. The first is the infrastructure at each campus. This includes paving and drainage, upgrades to utility capacity, way-finding signage, technology assessment, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, and furniture design.

The second phase is the construction of new buildings and facilities. Included in this are a new transportation center, allied health addition, and science facility at the Central campus; an allied health / science building and student success center at the North campus; and a science / allied health building and student success center at the South campus.

The final phase of the bond program is renovations to existing facilities. At the Central campus this includes the industrial technology buildings, Anders Gymnasium, and the Lee Davis Library. The North campus’ Nichols Gymnasium and Lehr library will receive an upgrade, as will the South campus’ Smallwood Gymnasium and Williams Library.

“We’re very excited to break ground on these new facilities, and begin the process of enhancing existing buildings, so that we can continue to prepare our students to live and work in our community,” noted Dr. Brenda Hellyer, San Jacinto College Chancellor. “We’ve experienced a significant growth in enrollment over the last few years, and this bond program will help us ensure that our students and citizens are successful in meeting their educational goals.”

Groundbreakings for the transportation and allied health expansion facilities at the Central campus are scheduled for June 16. Groundbreakings for the student success centers at the North and South campuses are planned for the Fall.
