Cheerleading coach Levis Francis joins San Jacinto College

Jeannie Peng-Armao -- 8/27/2010

PASADENA, Texas - San Jacinto College (SJC) welcomes its newest cheerleading coach, Levis Francis, to the squad.

A former Baltimore Ravens cheerleading co-captain, Francis replaces Buffy Powell, who retired last year from the SJC Central campus. Her coaching technique will incorporate sharp motions, clean routines, solid stunting, and an overall uniformed look.

"The style this year is very collegiate," said Francis. "At the same time, we do incorporate different styles, including funk and hip-hop elements into our routines to show our versatility."

Along with her NFL cheerleading experience, Francis has eight years of coaching experience, including five years with Los Angeles Valley College. She is certified by the National Cheerleading Association and the United Spirit Association and holds a bachelor's degree in communication from Morgan State University and a master's degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University.

”We were fortunate to have some outstanding applicants to replace Buffy Powell as cheerleading coach," said Scott Gernander, Head Coach of the SJC men’s basketball team. "In Levis, we think we got someone who can really motivate, who has a lot of experience and who is just eager to raise our cheer squad to a great level."

Francis said the team is eager to make their debut this semester at upcoming games at the Central campus.

"I am extremely excited to be here and in awe of my new team every day," said Francis. "They are a talented group of individuals. We are committed to working at our highest potential, supporting our teams and being of excellent service to our institution."
