HOUSTON – Dr. Laurel V. Williamson, vice chancellor for learning and student success at San Jacinto College (SJC), will take on an additional role of interim president at the SJC South Campus, effective June 1, 2012.

Current South Campus President Dr. Maureen Murphy recently accepted the president’s position at Brookdale Community College in Monmouth County, New Jersey, a position she will begin in July.

“I have the utmost confidence that Dr. Williamson will make the transition at the South Campus as seamless and easy as possible,” said San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer. “This will be a crucial time for the campus as we will be wrapping up the evaluation process for faculty and staff, and in the middle of the 2012-2013 budgeting process. Dr. Williamson will take a lead role in these efforts. The South Campus will be in very capable hands.”

A lifelong learner, Dr. Williamson is an innovative, visionary leader with more than 25 years of career experience in education and leadership in a community college setting. She is a respected leader, instructor, and administrator with success in budget management, grant development, strategic planning, accreditation, curriculum and program development, and community outreach. She has substantial background in overseeing programs in technical, academic, and community and continuing education, and in leading staff development and training.

“I am honored to be appointed to this interim position as South Campus president,” added Dr. Williamson. “I have worked closely with many faculty and staff at South in my current position, and I know that together we will continue the good work at the South Campus. This is an exciting time of growth and innovation at San Jacinto College, and taking this role at South opens up new avenues for outstanding achievement.”

Dr. Williamson has served as academic officer of Valencia Community College in Florida and Lower Columbia College in Washington. She also served as director of curriculum development at Southwest Mississippi Community College.

Dr. Williamson is a member of the Board of Directors of the Victorian Interdisciplinary Studies Association of the Western United States. She holds a doctorate in English Literature and has published essays and poetry. She is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
