SJC AlertMe
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SJC AlertMe service?

SJC AlertMe is an important tool that provides San Jacinto College with a communication method to keep students, faculty, and staff informed during threatening situations and weather-related closings. It allows the College to create and rapidly disseminate time-sensitive messages to telephone numbers stored in the notification database. Only authorized College officials are allowed access to the system.

Blackboard Connect is the vendor for the SJC AlertMe service.

How does the service work?

When it is determined by the appropriate college leadership that a threatening situation exists, or a weather-related closing is necessary, authorized officials will record a voice message and send a text message and email (if applicable) to the campus or campuses that are affected. The SJC AlertMe service allows for messages to be sent to thousands in a timely manner so that San Jacinto College students and employees are notified of the situation and can respond accordingly.

Please note: SJC AlertMe will call each phone number that you provide in SOS regardless of whether or not the call is answered. Text messages will only be sent once.

What types of messages will be sent using the service?

The SJC AlertMe service allows San Jacinto College officials to send voice, text, and email messages to all students and employees during an emergency situation. The service is also used to send student emails regarding campus events and emergency situations. The following alerts will be sent for the following level of determined seriousness of the alert:

Email only: When the alert is considered a warning but does not have an immediate need for action, the SJC AlertMe service will generate an email to students and employees.

Voice and Text Message: When it is determined that the alert requires immediate action or a closure will be occurring within the business day, a voice alert, text alert, and email alert are issued.

How do I sign up for SJC AlertMe?

San Jacinto College students and employees can sign up for the SJC AlertMe service through SOS. Login to your SOS account and click on the red SJC AlertMe tab. You will be prompted to enter a home, cell, and work phone number. You will also be asked to select which campus(es) for which you would like to receive notifications. You can select just the campus for which you attend or work, or you may select multiple campuses.

If you are a district employee that works on a campus, please select both district and your campus.

Please note: SJC AlertMe will call each phone number that you provide in SOS regardless of whether or not the call is answered. Text messages will only be sent once and only to the cell phone number you provide… if you do not provide a cell phone number, you will never receive a text message. If you enter your cell phone number in the space provided for “home phone” or “work phone,” you will NOT receive a text message.  ONLY cell phone numbers entered in the space provided for “cell phone” will receive a text message. Also, you must check the box stating that you understand you are responsible for any charges from your cellular phone service provider associated with receiving text messages.

Is there a fee to sign up for SJC AlertMe?

There is no cost to sign up for this notification service. However, when the system sends a voice or text message to your personal phone, you are responsible for any charges from your phone service provider associated with receiving voice or text messages.

How will I know when SJC AlertMe is contacting me?

Phone messages will come from (281) 998-6150, while text messages will be sent from either 23117 or 63079. Text messages will begin with the text “SJC AlertMe:” so that you know you are receiving an emergency notification message from the SJC AlertMe service.

If I’m not a student or employee at San Jacinto College, can I sign up for SJC AlertMe?

Unfortunately, at this time, only San Jacinto College students and employees can sign up for SJC AlertMe. However, the College has established an emergency information line at 1-888-845-5288. Community members can call that line at any time to hear the status of the College, including during emergency or weather situations. Emergency information is always posted on the College website at www.sanjac.edu and the website will always have the most accurate and current information.

What phone number will SJC AlertMe call in case of an emergency?

SJC AlertMe will call each phone number that you provide in SOS regardless of whether or not the call is answered. For example, if you provide a home, cell, and work phone number, and you answer your cell, but not the home or work, the service will still call the home and work numbers. Text messages will only be sent once and ONLY to your cell phone number. If you enter your cell phone number as your home phone number, you will not receive a text message… only cell phone numbers listed in the “cell phone” number area will receive a text message. Also, you must check the box stating that you understand you are responsible for any charges from your cellular phone service provider associated with receiving text messages to receive a text message.

If I don’t want to sign up for SJC AlertMe, can I still be notified of emergency situations?

If you do not sign up for the service, you will not receive a phone or text message. However, San Jacinto College has established an emergency notification line that you can call at 1-888-845-5288 to receive up-to-date information in case of an emergency. The San Jacinto College website, www.sanjac.edu, will also be updated if an emergency situation occurs.

I signed up for the SJC AlertMe service, but never received a text message.

In order to receive a text message, you must enter a cell phone number in the “Cell Phone” field in SOS. Also, you must check the box stating that you understand you are responsible for any charges from your cellular phone service provider associated with receiving text messages.

I no longer wish to receive SJC AlertMe messages. What should I do?

If you no longer wish to receive SJC AlertMe messages, please log in to your SOS account, click on the red SJC AlertMe tab, and remove all of your phone numbers (home, cell, work) from the system.
