Amanda L. Booren -- July 24, 2012
PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College volleyball Head Coach Sharon Nelson has announced the 2012 schedule, one that features six home matches, including the annual Dig Pink rally, and a match up with rival Blinn College.
“We have a packed schedule with a high number of matches in fewer dates than normal, but we’re excited to play such a competitive schedule,” said Nelson, who enters her 11th season at the helm of the San Jac volleyball program. “We will get a true test of where we stand nationally when we open the season in Iowa against the 2011 national runner up, and the third and fifth place teams.”
San Jacinto College begins the 2012 campaign on the road Aug. 23-25 at the Iowa Western Invitational Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa. San Jac will face national foes Eastern Arizona College, Western Wyoming Community College, Iowa Western, Western Nebraska Community College, and Dodge City Community College. Upon returning to Texas, San Jac will face Navarro College and North Central Texas in a trimatch before heading to Baytown for the Lee College Tournament.
A trip to Temple, Brenham, and the Woodlands Wave Patriot Tournament precedes the first home match on September 15 – a trimatch with Tyler Junior College, Lee College, and Wharton County Junior College, at which San Jacinto College will honor the 25th anniversary of the 1987 national championship team.
The 2012 Region XIV conference season includes home matches against Laredo Community College (Sept. 28), Coastal Bend Community College (Sept. 29), Blinn College (Oct. 2), Lee College (Oct. 12), and Wharton County Junior College (Oct. 24). The Dig Pink rally, a national initiative by the Side-Out Foundation to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, will be Oct. 12 against Lee College. This will be the fourth straight year for San Jac to participate.
The 2012 Region XIV conference tournament will take place Nov. 1-4 at Lee College in Baytown, and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship tournament will be Nov. 13-17 in West Plains, Mo.
With a 32-5 overall record last Fall, San Jac finished fourth in the nation. It was the seventh-straight trip to the NJCAA national tournament for San Jac.
