Brush up on math skills with quick, affordable math refresher course

Andrea Vasquez-- July 30, 2012

HOUSTON — New college students looking for a quick math refresher course before the Fall 2012 semester begins can now enroll in a new course offered by the San Jacinto College Continuing and Professional Development division.

Based on the successful program created by Alamo Colleges in San Antonio, Texas, the course is geared toward incoming first-time-in-college students, covering math concepts students learned in high school but may have forgotten over the summer break. Many students who take course placement tests like the COMPASS test may not score high enough to place out of a college preparatory math course, when their math skills are already at the college level.

“Some students take the COMPASS test without preparing and score into a college preparatory class that they may not need,” said San Jacinto College math professor, John Anderson. “This course provides a quick refresher for students before they take their math placement tests in order to help them place into college-level math courses that count toward their degree plans. It’s also beneficial to those students who have already taken a college-prep math course, but may have not taken another for a semester or two. Non-traditional students who are re-entering college to complete their degrees will also find this course beneficial, since some may not have taken a math course in quite some time.”

The weeklong course costs $21and includes a retest on the math portion of the COMPASS test on the last day of the course. Participating students will also be given access to MyMathTest, an online system with practice problems, examples, videos, and other math resources. At this time, the course is only available at the San Jacinto College South Campus, located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston.
