PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College offers computer information technology (IT) courses onsite for companies looking to save time and money on professional development for the latest software and networking skills.
The College's Continuing and Professional Development (CPD) division offers approximately 80 IT courses for training in such areas as Excel, Web marketing, and networking. Each course may be customized to address specific needs within a company. Computer professionals may also take the courses to earn certifications that are imperative when applying for IT positions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a growth of 18 percent for computer support specialists by 2020, with strong growth expected within the health care industry.
"There are many jobs in the Houston metropolitan area available for computer repair, networking, security, computer applications, and website development. Companies need people with these skills and certifications," said Jerelyn Glenn, director of Computer/IT training with CPD, adding that there is a definite price advantage when training through a public college. "Our costs are going to be almost a fourth to a half less than private companies. We also offer a variety of grants for financial assistance."
Kevin Harris, maintenance trainer with Lyondellbasell, turned to a CPD IT instructor to quickly train staff on Excel 2010. However, as with many companies, there wasn't much time to send employees across town for the training, and he needed the option to customize the course specific to employee responsibilities.
"We needed this course; otherwise, our productivity would have gone down," said Harris. "I searched online for training, but everything I found required us to travel across Houston. When I found out that San Jacinto College would travel to us, and the cost was much less, we were able to schedule a course and have it fit our needs at Lyondellbasell."
