Grammy winner Victor Wooten adds San Jacinto College to list of Fall tour locations
Jeannie Peng-Armao -- September 20, 2012
PASADENA, Texas – Five-time Grammy award winner, Victor Wooten, is coming to San Jacinto College for a one-night performance open to the Houston audience on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Wooten will perform new music from "Words and Tones," a collection of 14 tracks featuring female vocalists who have recorded with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Beyoncé, and Shania Twain. "Sword and Stone" is an instrumental album that showcases the different sides of Wooten’s approach to music, performance, and songwriting. On tour with him is Krystal Peterson, a young singing sensation from Cincinnati who is making her first appearance with the Victor Wooten band. Joining them are long time cohorts J. D. Blair, Derico Watson, Anthony Wellington, Steve Bailey, and Dave Welsch.
Known as "the Michael Jordan of the bass," Wooten will continue to tour heavily in the fall, including a string of dates co-headlining with The Jimmy Herring Band in November. He has shared the stage with such artists as The Dave Matthews Band, Prince, India Arie, Bruce Hornsby, and Chick Corea. He is also a founding member of the super-group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and released his first solo project in 1996 with "A Show of Hands," which carried the reputation as one of the most important bass records of all time with only a four-string bass and no multi-tracking. Wooten recently formed his own record label, Vix Records.
Voted Bassist of the Year three times by Bass Player Magazine, Wooten also lends his talent toward music education through lectures, workshops, and camps; he is the author of "The Music Lesson – A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music." His respected reputation as a teacher has garnered speaking and lecture invitations from such places as Strathmore College, Berklee College of Music, Stanford University, Harvard University, Mississippi State University, and Miami University.
Wooten will take the stage at 8 p.m. in Slocomb Auditorium. Shelly Berg, dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and University of Houston alumnus, will serve as the evening's host. Tickets are on sale now for $30 and will sell for $35 during the night of the performance. San Jacinto College students with a valid ID may purchase tickets for $15.
This event is sponsored by the San Jacinto College Foundation and the Audio Engineering Organization. All proceeds will benefit the Brittany Williams Scholarship Fund, which pays tuition for audio engineering students.
