Professional development courses offered for mental health facilitators this Fall

PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College will offer three courses this Fall specifically for mental health facilitators.

Each course includes 16 hours of instruction and will be held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the College's North Campus, located at 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston. Current Trends and Ethics in Substances Abuse Treatment on Oct. 20 and 27 will focus on the trends and treatments that are being implemented in the behavioral health and substance abuse counseling field. The course will also include three hours of ethics training to meet part of the Department of Social and Health Services CEU requirements for licensed chemical dependency counselors, licensed professional counselors, and licensed clinical social workers.

Prevention and Intervention of Aggressive Behavior on Nov. 10 and 17 will focus on prevention and offers proven strategies for safely defusing anxious, hostile, or violent behavior at the earliest possible stage. The course will also highlight current trends in hospital and mental health facilities as well as practices to help deal with disasters and crises in the health science professions.

Certified Domestic Violence Facilitator on Dec. 1 and 8 will include interactive lessons and exercises covering important topics such as respect and accountability, maintaining positive relationships, effective communication, parenting, and the role of religion in recovery. This course will give new instructors the needed amount of battering intervention and prevention program (BIPP) training as well as count toward the continuing education requirement for current instructors.
