HOUSTON – San Jacinto College and the Women’s Resource of Greater Houston are collaborating to offer a financial workshop geared for women and girls 13 and older, but open to males also.

The two-day workshop is free and open to the public, and will held on Monday, Nov. 5 from 8:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Tuesday, Nov. 6 from 8:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. All workshop sessions will be held at San Jacinto College North, 5800 Uvalde Road, in the Monument Room, which is located on the second floor of the Slovacek Student Center. No registration is required.

The Monday, Nov. 5 workshop will include two sessions:

  1. “Money Basics,” which will deal with management tools and strategies for achieving financial goals. Those attending will learn about building realistic budgets, evaluating family communication about money, and comparing banking needs and options.
  2. “Borrowing Basics,” which will deal with how credit works and how participants can determine whether they are ready to apply for credit or loans. Attendees will also learn about the value of credit and find out about different types of loans.

The Tuesday, Nov. 6 workshop, “Pay Yourself First,” will deal with the importance of saving money, and participants will learn savings options. At the conclusion of the workshop participants can enter a college scholarship essay contest.

Dr. DeRhonda McWaine, San Jacinto College student success course coordinator, says she received positive feedback from last year's workshop. “We had a very successful workshop last year, during which many students and members of the community learned valuable financial strategies to help them improve their lives,” commented McWaine. “We encourage everyone to attend this year’s event to receive valuable financial guidance.”
