LyondellBasell helps grow Energy Venture Camp and reunion
Jeannie Peng-Armao -- December 18, 2012
PASADENA, Texas – LyondellBasell has donated $6,000 to provide scholarships to San Jacinto College’s Energy Venture Camp 2013 and help fund the annual camp reunion in February.
A partner in the program since its inception, LyondellBasell’s grant will allow 10 students to attend the 2013 summer camp free of charge where they will learn about lucrative careers in the energy industry.
"There is a strong partnership with LyondellBasell on this annual event," said Linda Drobnich, senior business development manager at San Jacinto College, noting that the company also sponsors a plant tour and provides speakers.
More than 1,000 students ages 12 and older have completed Energy Venture since it began six years ago. Curriculum is developed by refinery business experts and includes field trips to surrounding plants and activities geared toward the oil and gas industry with emphasis on engineering and process technology. The program introduces many to a college setting for the first time.
"It's an exciting time to be a part of the energy industry and bring in future generations," said Tim Westby, LyondellBasell site manager. "The need is growing in the chemical and refining industries for more workers in careers that are challenging, creative, and well-paying. ”
The donation also helps sponsor a reunion for Energy Venture alumni to return to their former campsite and participate in an activity related to the energy field. Camp reunions serve as refreshers for participants by encouraging them to consider a college education while also keeping them informed of employment opportunities throughout the region.
