Certification courses offered in education and mental health at San Jacinto College

PASADENA, Texas – The Continuing and Professional Development (CPD) division at San Jacinto College offers a variety of education and language courses this semester for participants looking for additional certifications.

The Para Educator Institute Training (No Child Left Behind certification) is available from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays from Feb. 9 to 23; April 13 to 27; or May 4 to 18 at the South Campus, located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston. The four training modules include mathematics, reading, writing and professional ethics. Upon passing the Para Educator Assessment of Competencies exam given on day three of the Institute, participants will receive certification towards employment in the 21 participating Consortium for the Advancement of Professional Excellence (C.A.P.E.) school districts. Cost is $195.

The Childcare Development Associate Training, Certificate III in Spanish, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays from April 13 to June 8 at the North Campus, located at 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston. This course will provide educational training for persons interested in teaching young children. Upon successful completion of the three Child Development Associate Training courses, the participant will meet the qualifications as set forth in the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Minimum Standards. Cost is $332.

The following courses are for mental health professionals looking for additional certifications. Each course is held at the North Campus. Cost is $275.

Anger Management Facilitator Training from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 23 and 30 and will provide participants with a framework for anger management group instruction, as well as some insight into aggression and frustration theory and the fight or flight concepts of human behavior. The course is to offer certification to therapists, counselors, social workers, group facilitators, and training managers.

Prevention and Intervention of Aggressive Behavior from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 23 and will focus on prevention and offers proven strategies for safely defusing anxious, hostile, or violent behavior at the earliest possible stage. The course will also highlight current trends in hospital and mental health facilities as well as practices to help deal with disasters and crises in the health science professions. 

Current Trends and Ethics in Substances Abuse Treatment from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 6 and 13 will focus on the trends and treatments that are being implemented in the behavioral health and substance abuse counseling field. The course will also include three hours of ethics training to meet part of the Department of Social and Health Services CEU requirements for licensed chemical dependency counselors, licensed professional counselors, and licensed clinical social workers.
