Guideline 4-11 Performance Reviews

***This guideline is under revision for Fiscal Year 2012-2013***

San Jacinto College has a general evaluation procedure that enables the College and its employees to describe their success in meeting goals and objectives. The evaluation processes also offer information regarding student satisfaction with the instructional program, thus contributing to the ongoing improvement of instruction.

Student Evaluation of Instruction

Near the end of the fall and spring semesters, students are asked to evaluate courses and instruction, both in the classroom and in lab settings. There are four different evaluation documents:

  1. academic and vocational classes with no labs
  2. academic and vocational classes with labs
  3. developmental classes
  4. classes that require clinical labs

In most cases, each instructor's students complete evaluations for one section of each class preparation he or she teaches. If an instructor teaches several sections of the same course, the section to complete the evaluation is chosen randomly by the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation; however, faculty may request that all of their classes participate in the evaluation process. Associate Deans and department chairmen are responsible for arrangements to allow instructors to switch classes for the evaluations so that no instructor administers an evaluation to his or her own class.

Results of the student evaluations are available to instructors and instructional supervisors several weeks after the end of the semester. Instructors receive summarized data about their students’ responses and comparative data about responses throughout the division and the College as a whole. They also have a chance to read any written comments students include with the scantron evaluations.

Faculty Performance Review

The faculty performance review is another aspect of the college's evaluation program. New personnel members go through a formal review process in the first year of full-time employment by the College. Thereafter, instructors go through the process every other year. Except when annual evaluations are requested by either the faculty or supervisors, instructors who are employed in even-numbered years complete the review process in even-numbered years; instructors employed in odd-numbered years complete the process only in odd-numbered years.

Department Chair Performance Review

Each spring, faculty are asked to evaluate their department chair. The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation distributes the forms and requests that completed forms, along with any additional comments, be returned to that office. Supervisors receive summarized data from the evaluations that their personnel submit. They also receive the comments personnel have added to the evaluation form.

Adjunct Faculty Performance Review

Adjunct faculty members will be evaluated during the first semester of every academic year that they teach.

Evaluation of Instructional Supervisor

Each spring, faculty are asked to evaluate instructional supervisors. The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation distributes the forms and requests that completed forms, along with any additional comments be returned to that office. Supervisors receive summarized data from the evaluations that their personnel submit. They also receive the comments personnel have added to the evaluation form.

Staff Performance Review

College employees participate in an annual performance review in all areas of the College. The staff employee's supervisor will conduct the review. An evaluation form is completed, discussed with the employee, and then returned to the Human Resources Office.

Administrator Performance Review

Each administrator of the College shall be evaluated annually. The administrator's supervisor will perform the evaluation. An evaluation form is completed and discussed with the administrator. Human Resources Office distributes the forms and requests that completed forms, along with any additional comments, be returned to that office. The administrator may prepare a response to the evaluation. The response will be included in the administrator's personnel file.
