San Jacinto College South celebrates 30 years

HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College South campus is hosting a week of fun, reflection, and community service in celebration of their 30-year anniversary. During the week of October 18-24, the South campus will be going back to the 70s, honoring when it first opened the doors to students in the late 1970s.

“This week’s festivities kick off an entire academic year of our celebration of San Jacinto College South joining the San Jacinto College family,” said South campus president, Dr. Maureen Murphy. “We are excited to welcome back students who have attended and graduated from our campus, along with our current students and staff, and we look forward to a great week of fun activities.”

Activities begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, when the men’s soccer team, ranked fifth in the nation, takes on one of their biggest rivals, third-ranked Tyler Junior College. Continuing with the sports theme, the women’s softball team hosts its alumni softball game at noon on Sunday, Oct. 19.

When faculty and staff head to work on Monday, Oct. 20, they will be dressed in their grooviest threads on employee retro day. At 11:30 a.m., the College will host a “best dressed” contest in the J.D. Bruce Student Center. The contest will also showcase far out styles presented by the South campus cosmetology students. The faculty and staff will be decorating their offices with the 70s theme and will be judged on Oct. 22.

As a way to give back to the community for the 30 years of support, the College will host a blood drive sponsored by the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21 in the J.D. Bruce Student Center. The college’s goal is to get at least 200 donors. All donors will receive a free T-shirt.

The festivities will come to a close at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 with a children’s fall festival. For over 15 years, this event has become a staple for the College and the South Belt community. As a trick-or-treating alternative, the festival offers food, fun, and games for the entire family.

All events are free of charge and the College encourages everyone to enjoy a good time amidst this hectic semester following Hurricane Ike.
