Introduction - CIS/CS
Careers in computer information systems are forecast to be among the fastest growing occupations through 2010. This means that investments today in computer training can pay off for years to come. In addition, updated training enables current computer professionals to maintain a competitive edge.

Areas of opportunity include application programming, computer support network administration and Web application development. Computer professionals may develop programs or Web sites, set up and maintain computer networks or answer questions and solve problems for less knowledgeable computer users.

While you are gaining on-the-job experience, you can continue taking classes to help you prepare for industry certifications. Certificates supported include A+ Certified Webmaster (CIW), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) and Oracle Internet Application.

All San Jacinto College Computer Information Systems instructors are experienced computer specialists with years of experience. They know what it takes to be successful on the job. In addition, the program relies on an active Advisory Committee from local employers to make sure the courses teach you the skills that area employers need. The internship program has led many students to full time jobs in the computer field.

The Computer Information Systems/ Computer Science  Department of San Jacinto College offers the two-year Associate Arts in Computer Science and the Associate of Applied Science Degree in six degree areas, and certifications in several specialties.

Due to variations in requirements at major universities, students desiring to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science should consult a counselor to develop a degree plan suitable to their designated universities. The following Computer Information Systems program is not designed primarily for students seeking a bachelor’s degree. The Computer Information Systems curriculum is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the principles of computer information systems, experience with techniques of processing data, and functional competence in the application of computer information systems. 

Five degree specialties are available to the student based on his/ her primary area of interest. In the Applications Programming Specialty, emphasis is placed on computer information systems and the use of computer languages in the solution of business and scientific problems. In the Cisco and Microsoft Computer Support Specialties, the emphasis is on the setup and use of microcomputers in computer information systems. In the Network Administration Specialty, emphasis is on the design, implementation and administration of local and wide area networks. Web Application Development addresses the design.

The program is designed to provide the student with basic skills in microcomputer setup and applications. Emphasis is placed upon the use, support, and repair of microcomputers. This curriculum is designed primarily for entry into the workplace and not for transfer.

The program is designed to provide the student with basic skills in Microsoft Network Administration. Emphasis is placed upon the installation and maintenance of networks in the business and scientific environments. This curriculum is designed primarily for entry into the workplace and not for transfer.

The program is designed to provide the student with basic skills in Cisco Network Administration. Emphasis is placed upon the installation and maintenance of networks in the business and scientific environments. This curriculum is designed for entry into the workplace and not for transfer.

Certificates of Specialization

The Computer Information Systems Certificates of Specialization are designed to meet the needs of those students who desire the basic skills to enter the field of Computer Information Systems. Students are eligible for the certificates indicated below upon completion of the designated courses with grades of at least C in each course. At least one-half of the credit hours must be earned at San Jacinto College. Application for these certificates should be made in the division office.
