Introduction - Drama
For persons focused on a career in fine arts, there is no better place to sharpen that vision than at San Jacinto College. Here, students develop and refine their skills in small classes taught by creative and accomplished instructors. We offer quality training in theater for transfer to a senior college or for the Associate of Arts degree in drama. Two years of San Jacinto College credits are transferable to many four-year universities. Our theater program is backed by the same dedication to excellence that has made San Jacinto College a recognized educational leader.

The Department of Theater at San Jacinto College offers a complete range of courses for those interested in pursuing a theater or drama major. Theater students take their place in the spotlight on a regular basis. Those who spend two years in the college's transfer drama program can expect to participate in as many as 16 productions--as actors, set designers, make-up artists, and even writers and directors. A solid core curriculum, including: acting, make-up, oral interpretation, voice and diction, and technical theater forms the basis of this program which will have students ready for center stage when they transfer to a four-year university. Many of our students begin professional work within Houston-area theaters and performance venues before graduating or transferring.

Performance at San Jacinto College has enjoyed a history of success for several years. The department's productions consistently receive superior and excellent ratings at the Texas Junior College Speech/Theater Association Play Festival and regularly participate in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival at the state and regional levels.

Theater Facilities include modern and comfortable teaching spaces designed to help students grow academically. Small classes, outstanding instructors, modern facilities, and low cost are all good reasons to prepare for tomorrow's creative careers through San Jacinto College's theater program.

Scholarships are available each year to selected members of the theater department through a competitive review of applications, past teacher recommendations, personal interviews, and auditions. In addition, there are federal loans and grants as well as academic scholarships awarded through the college and work-study opportunities. San Jacinto College's dedication to the total educational experience assures that our communication students always take center stage.
