Introduction - Geographic Information Science
The Geographic Information Science program is designed for entry into the emergent technology of GIS. Using several industry-specific software programs, students will learn the acquisition, processing and merging of data, and the application of GIS for modeling and analysis. Classroom learning, fieldwork, and work experience will prepare the student with not only the technical skill but also the ability to analyze geographic data that will be in demand in the diverse employment market.
What Is GIS:
It is the unique marriage of the old (cartography) and the new (computers) to produce a computer based data processing tool used to manage and analyze spatial information. GIS focuses on the examination and study of the shifting organization and character of the earth’s surface. Since our ability to change the environment, both physically and culturally, has accelerated dramatically, it takes the computer technology of GIS to keep up with the demand for accurate information and spatial analysis.
