The health information technician is an important part of the healthcare team. Health information management technicians are professionals who secure, analyze, integrate, and manage information that guides the healthcare industry. A career in health information management combines patient care, management and technology.

Health information management opportunities continue to grow. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that more than 47,000 additional information management professionals will be needed by this year. the professional work setting is varied and includes hospitals, clinics, health maintenance organizations, insurance companies, law firms, nursing homes, health data organizations and information systems vendors.

The associate degree program is designed to train Health Information Management personnel to perform a variety of technical functions including organizing, analyzing, coding, and technically evaluating health information. Health information technicians work to ensure that complete and accurate records are kept for each patient in a health care facility. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the Council on Accreditation of the American Health Information Management Association. Students are eligible to apply to write the national exam for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) after completion of the A.A.S. degree.
