Introduction - Diesel Technology
The Diesel Technology program is best known for training students and getting them into the workforce, while offering access to the most modern diesel engine training modules in the marketplace.
San Jacinto College North was one of the nation’s first community colleges to offer a diesel technology training facility. The program has been awarded exemplary status from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
Diesel technology is a high-technology field where electronic control systems monitor and adjust engine operating characteristics on a millisecond basis. San Jacinto College North stays abreast of this ever-changing atmosphere thanks to its networking with CEOs of national diesel companies who constantly advise the college.
Professors understand that the work of today’s diesel technicians is more often that of a diagnostician, using their personal computer to troubleshoot challenging problems. Thus, curriculum constantly evolves to reflect needed analytical skills.
Electronic training is offered on state-of-the-art products. This includes utilization of the latest electronic engine diagnostic software, demonstrated in a classroom environment through big screen projection of the personal computer screen images. The program is a study of all major equipment systems, including heavy transmissions and differentials, air brakes, air conditioning and heavy duty starter and alternator repair. Special emphasis is placed on electrical and fuel injection systems theory and practical application.
Today’s diesel technology graduates can expect a highly rewarding career with excellent financial and employment security. Our well-trained graduates enjoy a 97 percent student job placement rate.
Employment of diesel technicians is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2005. Increased employment will be due to greater use of buses trucks for hauling freight, and other diesel powered machines.
Texas employment in 1990 was 17,300. Number expected to be employed in 2000 will be 19,700. There is an expected annual opening of about 825. Salary can range from $12.00 to $17.49 per hour based on industry, size of the business, the individual employee’s training, education, job responsibility, and geographic location.
