Introduction - Geology
Study the history of the earth and discover the path to success! San Jac’s geology classes take you out of this world without ever leaving the planet!

  • Annual median salary for geological and petroleum technicians is $37,500 and the predicted rate of growth is 6% (through 2008)
  • SJC offers physical, historical and environmental geology

Geoscientists follow paths of exploration and discovery in quest to meet some of society's most challenging problems such as:

  • Predicting the behavior of Earth systems.
  • Finding adequate supplies of natural resources, such as ground water, petroleum, and metals.
  • Developing natural resources in ways that safeguard the environment.
  • Maintaining quality of water supplies.
  • Reducing human suffering and property loss from natural hazards, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, landslides, hurricanes, and tsunamis.

Students taking geology at San Jacinto College major in many fields, including education, business, English, and art. Most take geology to fulfill a laboratory science requirement.

Physical Geology

PHYSICAL GEOLOGY is the study of rocks and minerals, the physical features that make up the earth's surface and subsurface, the changes they undergo, and the processes that bring about these changes. Upon completing this course a student will receive 4 hours of physical science credit.

One special section of Physical Geology is offered at the Central campus. This course is Physical Geology for Elementary Education Majors and it has modified laboratory activities to help students prepare for a career in teaching.

Historical Geology

HISTORICAL GEOLOGY is the study of the major changes that have occurred to the earth and its life over the past 4.6 billion years. Emphasis will be given to the geologic changes in North America. Students will learn to identify numerous organisms based upon the fossil record. Upon completing the course, a student will receive 4 hours of physical science credit.

Environmental Geology

ENVIROMENTAL GEOLOGY studies the effects of geological processes combined with natural forces and human activity on the global environment. Three major areas will be covered: Natural Resources, Water and Natural Hazards. Upon completion of this course, a student will receive a 4 hour physical science credit.

FIELD TRIPS: You may have several field trips DURING CLASS TIME when taking Environmental geology. Weekend trips will also be offered during the semester.
