What is Sociology?
Sociology is an interdisciplinary science. It covers issues pertaining to culture, health and medicine, race and ethnicity, education, marriage and the family, religion, crime, and deviance. Sociology is relevant in all aspects of human life.
Sociology is a broad discipline. The central focus being the issues, problems, trials and triumphs of people trying to get along with each other, in other words, human relationships. The discipline has something to say to people trying to get along is a family, or as members of a team, or as neighbors, or as employees trying to figure out work relations. The point is sociology is relevant wherever human relations are at work and it provides insights that are applicable to a wide array of human circumstances. (Stephens, 1995)
Why should I take Sociology?
Sociology can be a very useful tool in understanding the workings of your family, peers, and any other group of which you are a part.
Why should I take a sociology class at San Jacinto College?Sociology is a required class for many majors. If you plan to transfer to a four-year college, you may prefer to take it here. At San Jacinto College, sociology, like many classes, is taught in a small class. The teacher-student ratio is smaller and you can receive personal attention. In most four-year schools, you can have one hundred or more people in your class and work with a teaching assistant instead of the professor.
Will my sociology class transfer to a four-year school?Absolutely! At many four-year schools, it can fulfill the social science requirements. It is also a required class for many majors. You can transfer your sociology credit(s) to fulfill your elective requirements.
If I have already taken Introductory Sociology, are there other sociology classes offered at San Jacinto College?Yes! You can expand on many of the topics covered in your introductory sociology course. San Jacinto College offers courses in Social Problems, Criminology, Marriage and Family, and Multi-Cultural Studies.
What are possible employment opportunities for sociologists?Sociologists are employed in varied settings. They work in government and private institutions or agencies. Clinical sociologists can counsel children and help improve work relationships. Sociologists are also employed by advertising agencies in conducting marketing research. Since sociology is an interdisciplinary field, the possibilities are endless.
