For Faculty
One of my students has requested that I complete an academic reference form for employment at the Math Lab. What do I need to do?
Thank you so much for agreeing to complete a reference form for your student! Please click on the following link to complete and submit the form. You will receive an email confirmation from the Math Lab Supervisor to acknowledge receipt.
What services does the Math Lab provide for my students?
Free Tutoring
The Math Lab offers free tutoring in any math class offered by San Jacinto College. For classes above Calculus I, Finite, or Statistics, tutors may not always be available so a schedule will be posted and sent to instructors.
Wi-fi/Computer/MyMathLab Access
The Math Lab has computers and wi-fi so that students can receive assistance with homework on MyMathLab. Laptops may also be checked out from the library's reference desk.
Students can come to the Math Lab for assistance in setting up their MyMathLab account. We do ask that they have their course ID and key handy.
What does my student need to bring in order to use the Math Lab? Does it cost anything?
Students need only to bring their student ID to utilize the Math Lab. The Math Lab is free for all students of San Jacinto College.
Can students check out resources from the Math Lab?
All resources (textbooks, calculators, course-specific videos) may now be checked out from the reserve desk on the first floor of the library.
How do I contact the Math Lab? When is the Math Lab open?
The Math Lab can be reached by dialing x 3216 from any line on campus or by emailing math.south@sjcd.edu.
The Math Lab is open Monday – Thursday 9:00 am – 9:00 pm; Friday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm; Saturday 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. For the most up-to-date information, visit our website at http://www.sanjac.edu/south-math-lab.
Can I have someone visit my class to tell my students about the services the Math Lab provides?
Absolutely! Each long semester, the Math Lab schedules class visitations for all sections of Math 0304, Math 0305, Math 0306, and Math 1314. If your class is not listed and you would like someone to visit your class, just email math.south@sjcd.edu and the Math Lab Supervisor will set up a time and date that is convenient for you.
Can I request a visit history for a student or a class?
Absolutely! The Math Lab Supervisor can send you the visit history for your classes. All you need to do is email the list of student GID’s or the class name and section number (e.g. MATH0304.301) that you would like a printed visit history for to math.south@sjcd.edu.
Why can't I test in the lab?
The Math Lab is not an ideal testing environment due to (a) the small space and (b) the volume in the Math Lab.
I'll just be a few minutes. I don't expect anyone to proctor the test; my student just needs to finish up and I give permission. Why can't I use the Math Lab for this?
We have had to turn students away as there are not enough seats in the Math Lab to meet the current demand. If a student is testing in the Math Lab, that means that there is one less seat available for students needing assistance.
What about take home tests or graded homework? How can I be sure my student won't get unauthorized help from the Math Lab?
To be sure that we are enforcing the policies that you have set forth in class, we do ask the following:
If a student is allowed to receive assistance on a homework assignment or take-home test, please notate that on the assignment or test.
If a student is not allowed to receive assistance, please provide us with a copy of the assignment or test. It will be posted and all tutors will be notified.
I have a question that isn't listed here. Who can I contact?
Please email the Math Lab Supervisor at math.south@sjcd.edu. You will receive a response within 48 hours.
