PIANISTS

Categories: Maximum Length of Performance a. Grades 7-9 10 minutes b. Grades 10-12 10 minutes

1. Two memorized pieces of contrasting style are required. Please indicate the exact timing of the performance on the application form. If the length of the performance exceeds the indicated time, the judges may stop the performance.

2. All musical selections in the contest must be original solo compositions for the piano. No arrangements will be allowed.

3. Contestants should provide an original copy of the music for the judges with measures numbered. No photocopies will be allowed.

4. Each entrant will receive a comment sheet from the judge and a rating of division 1 through 5.

5. All entrants in each category will receive a certificate of participation as well as comment sheets from both judges. A top winner will be selected in each category and will receive a $150 cash prize. A runner-up may be awarded a $75 cash price. A San Jacinto College music scholarship may be offered to deserving participants from the Grade 10-12 category. Award recipients will participate in a short winners’ recital after the conclusion of the awards ceremony.

6. A second hearing may be required in order to determine the top prize.

7. The competition will be limited to the first 40 applicants.

SINGERS

1. Singers in grades 8-12 are eligible to enter the competition.

2. Two memorized pieces of contrasting style are required. The total length of the two selections should not exceed 8 minutes. If the length of the performance exceeds the required time, the judges may stop the performance.

3. Both musical selections must be from the standard solo vocal literature (Art Songs, and Oratorio or Opera arias.) The selections may be sung in the original language or in English translation. No pop or Broadway selections will be allowed.

4. Singers are encouraged to bring their own accompanist. An accompanist will be provided for an additional fee of $25 per applicant. Rehearsals with a San Jacinto College accompanist will be at the accompanist’s discretion.
