Guiding Principles

The following principles have been developed with the College values in mind in regards to social media.

“We conduct ourselves in ways that are professional, instill confidence, and promote trust.”

Social media is a valuable way to connect with others who share your interests. We invite and encourage you to interact and comment on our social media sites. However, no site is “private” and comments made online may follow you to work or to school. Please remember to always keep your comments respectful, and act with dignity within the online realm.

All of the College’s human resource policies and the Student Code of Conduct (found in the Student Handbook at www.sanjac.edu) apply online, as do Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and regulations.

This includes adhering to the terms of service for each social media channel that you elect to use. Facebook, in particular, has very specific guidelines surrounding promotions, which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/policies/. If you have questions concerning the terms of service of a particular medium, please contact the social media coordinator at socialmedia@sjcd.edu.

The College does not endorse any content posted by third parties on its social media sites.

“We take risks, we assess our work, and we aspire to improve the quality of everything we do.”

We are committed to our social media initiatives as a way of opening and establishing new lines of communication with our students and the San Jacinto College community. We are dedicated to creating quality sites with creative and informative content, that allow for dynamic conversation.

“We take ownership for our commitments and outcomes.”

San Jacinto College did not enter into social media lightly – we are committed to creating valuable, informative, and interactive sites for our San Jacinto College community. If you ever have questions or need assistance, we are here to help you.

“We anticipate change, explore opportunities, and create continuously evolving solutions.”

We are committed to our social media initiatives as a way of opening and establishing new lines of communication with our students and the San Jacinto College community. We are dedicated to creating quality sites with creative and informative content, that allow for dynamic conversation.

“We demonstrate concern for the well-being and success for our students, our communities, and our people.”

One of the main goals of social media is to create online communities where our students, staff, faculty, partners, alumni, and community can interact with the College and each other, and learn more about San Jacinto College. Social media provides an opportunity for San Jacinto College to showcase its people and programs via a tool that reaches a wide range of people.

“We respect and learn from the diversity of our cultures, experiences, and perspectives.”

San Jacinto College encourages a healthy expression of viewpoints and worldviews. We believe we can all broaden our horizons and learn from one another through healthy discussion. If you find yourself in disagreement with someone, and want to state a differing opinion, please do so in a respectful manner. However, if your comment includes profanity or attacks someone personally, it will be removed from our official College social media sites without warning. Language that is illegal, obscene, defamatory, threatening, infringing of intellectual property rights, invasive of privacy, profane, libelous, threatening, harassing, abusive, hateful or embarrassing to any person or entity, or otherwise injurious or objectionable is unacceptable and shall be removed.

Some conversations are just better left offline. If you are not certain as to the appropriateness of a comment, contact the social media coordinator at socialmedia@sjcd.edu for assistance.

If you are an employee of San Jacinto College and state your relationship with the College on your personal social media site(s), please remember that this can be perceived as acting as a spokesperson for the College. If you wish to disclose your relationship with San Jacinto College as an employee, please include the following disclaimer in your profile:

“I am not authorized to speak on behalf of San Jacinto College and the views expressed on this site are mine and do not necessarily reflect those of San Jacinto College.”

“We believe in the power of working together.”

We encourage our students, employees, alumni, and the online community to engage and collaborate with us to make our social media sites valuable sources of information for San Jacinto College. Our social media coordinator actively works with employees and students to share their information and find answers to their questions.

Any social media sites created using the College’s name, or any variation thereof, are the express property of San Jacinto College, not the employee who has created them, or retains administrative rights to them. If you leave the College it is your responsibility to transfer administrative rights to your replacement, or provide them with login information and remove yourself as an administrator from this site. Employees who are taking over as administrators will need to change all passwords and log in information immediately.

If you continue to operate a social media site on behalf of the College after your employment is terminated, you may be faced with legal action. If you are unsure of whom to transfer administrative rights too, please contact the social media coordinator for assistance at socialmedia@sjcd.edu.
