Below is a guide to assist you in the application and use of your veteran education benefits as well as beginning your pathway to success in college and your career.

VA First Steps

Step 1.  Admissions - Complete an application:

Step 2.  Claim your SOS account – (48 hours of submitting your application)

  • Click First Time User
  • Contact TechSupport at 281-998-6137 if you receive an error

Step 3. Which VA education benefit will you use.

  • Veteran Education benefits available:

Step 4. If attending another college or to change your program complete a Change of Program/ Place of Training form (VA Form 1995)

  • There is only one address approved to use on the (VA FORM 1995)

  • Approval from VA education benefits may take 25- 45 business days

Step 5. Financial Aid and Scholarships – Apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships in addition to your VA educational benefits

Step 6.  Transcripts - Send all official transcripts from high school, colleges, universities and your military transcript

  • Request your Military Transcripts (Army, Marine, Navy, Coast Guard):

Step 7.   Placement Testing – Most Veterans are exempt from college placement testing.  Meet with a VA Educational Planner to determine if testing is needed prior to enrollment. 

  • Legacy or new first time in college students should complete the Accuplacer Pre Assessment Activity (PAA):

Step 8.   Meningitis Vaccination - Proof of bacterial meningitis vaccination must be submitted to the Admissions Office prior to class registration.  For more information and a list of exemptions visit:

**College students under the age of 22 years old are required to have the vaccination. **

Step 9.   Orientation - It is mandatory for all first time in college students, including former Dual Credit students, to attend New Student Orientation (NSO) prior to registering for classes.

  • Sign up online via your SOS account.
  • Sign up for a Veteran Benefit Review online through the appointment scheduler:

Step 10.  Meet with VA Educational Planner to discuss test results, degree plans, and course requirements.

  • Login to your SOS account to search for classes and build your class schedule. 

Step 11.  Once registered for classes submit your documents via the online certification request:

Federal Benefits (Chapters 33, 31, 35, 1606, 1607)

  • Certificate of Eligibility (If Veteran served after 9-11-2001) 
  • DD214 of the Service Member 4 or 7 copy
  • Schedule Fee Bill (Displays the courses you are enrolled in, and the cost of tuition and   fees)
    • Save document as a pdf (print to pdf) on your computer to upload.
  • Detailed Degree Evaluation (Displays the courses you are enrolled in, on your degree plan)  
    • Save document as a pdf (print to pdf) on your computer to upload.

Hazlewood (Hazlewood Veteran, Hazlewood Legacy, Hazlewood Dependent Child/ Spouse)

Education – Texas Veterans Commission

  • DD214 of the Service Member 4 or 7 copy
  • Certificate of Eligibility or Ineligibility of federal VA benefits
  • Schedule Fee Bill (Displays the courses you are enrolled in, and the cost of tuition and   fees)
    • Save document as a pdf (print to pdf) on your computer to upload.
  • Detailed Degree Evaluation (Displays the courses you are enrolled in, on your degree plan)  
    • Save document as a pdf (print to pdf) on your computer to upload.
  • Full Hazlewood Application submitted once a year in the fall or your first semester each calendar year.
