High School Equivalency Exams

San Jacinto College Testing Centers offer testing for students to attain a certificate of high school equivalency for the state of Texas. The two high school equivalency exams are the Pearson General Educational Development (GED) and the ETS High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). Each exam is available in English and Spanish.

You can review TEA's comparison chart for a comprehensive look at how GED and HiSET differ.

You should visit the GED website to find more information about the exam and learn eligibility and registration guidelines. When you're ready to test, you can schedule through GED.

If you are eligible to receive testing accommodations, you need to confirm what accommodations GED can provide. San Jac will work with GED to ensure you receive any approved accommodations.

GED provides official study material to help you prepare. Additionally, San Jac offers preparatory courses through the Continuing and Professional Development (CPD) office if you need more intensive help.

Once you pass the GED exam, you can receive your certificate through GED.

You should visit the HiSET website to find more information about the exam and learn eligibility and registration guidelines. When you're ready to test, you can schedule through HiSET.

If you are eligible to receive testing accommodations, you need to confirm what accommodations HiSET can provide. San Jac will work with HiSET to ensure you receive any approved accommodations.

HiSET provides official study material to help you prepare.

Once you pass the HiSET exam, you can receive your certificate through HiSET.

GED and HiSET each vary in time allowed depending the sections you will take. You can take scheduled breaks between sections, but you cannot pause the exam and must finish within the allowed time limit.

When you're ready to test, be sure to have:

  • Your government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.)
  • Proof of residency

If you need to retest, please confirm your eligibility with GED or HiSET. Each has different retesting policies.
