The 21st Annual San Jacinto College Foundation Golf Tournament returns Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016 at the Golf Club of Houston. The evening reception will feature a special performance by “The Voice” season six runner-up and La Porte native, Jake Worthington.

“We are looking forward to hosting another great golf tournament at the Golf Club of Houston this year,” said San Jacinto College Foundation Board Chair and Texas Citizens Bank Regional President, Tom Watson. “Our tournament is one of our most anticipated events that helps provide scholarships to deserving students. This PGA course is home to The Shell Houston Open and is a great experience for golfers at any level. You cannot find a better course, and you cannot find a better cause.”

All proceeds from the golf tournament and reception will go toward student success scholarships which help San Jacinto College students complete their associate degree or certificate, allowing them to transfer into four-year university programs or enter the workforce. Last spring, the San Jacinto College Foundation awarded 299 scholarships totaling $144,548. This fall, an estimated $237,150 will be awarded through 354 scholarships.

The host committee for the 2016 golf tournament includes Andy and Laura Pettitte; Dan Pastorini; Maurice “Termite” Watkins; Reggie “Air Man” Dixon; Hammie Ward; Reggie Johnson; John “JR” and Sheressa Moon; Jimmy and Peggy Burke; Louis Rigby; and Danny and Margaret Snooks. Major sponsors for this year’s tournament include John “JR” Moon; The Coca-Cola Company; Steve Cowart; Furniture Marketing Group, Inc.; Haworth; Lubrizol; Ken Phelps State Farm; Texas Citizens Bank; Tellepsen; Siemens; McGriff, Seibels & Williams; and Daniel J. Snooks.

The event begins with registration and lunch at 10:30 a.m. The luncheon will be emceed by KPRC Channel 2 weekend meteorologist Justin Stapleton, followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The format is a Florida scramble consisting of four-person teams, regardless of handicap. Two flights will be determined after all scores are submitted, and the average score will be the break point for the division of the two flights.

A reception featuring dinner and a raffle with great prizes will begin at 6 p.m. Guests will also enjoy a special musical performance by “The Voice” season six runner-up and La Porte native, Jake Worthington. There is no cost to attend the reception.

Each year at the golf tournament the San Jacinto College Foundation honors one of its members with a Lifetime Legacy Award, commemorating the recipient’s years of giving to the Foundation which have helped change students’ lives through access to education. This year’s Lifetime Legacy Award will be presented to John and Wynell Phelps. Mr. and Mrs. Phelps are dedicated to educational advancement and have been generous supporters of the Foundation since 1997, giving more than $100,000 in personal gifts and corporate matching funds. The Wynell Phelps Endowed Scholarship is a need-based scholarship that has awarded approximately $68,700 in student scholarships to date. Mr. Phelps served on the San Jacinto College Foundation Board of Directors for 20 years and was recently named an Emeritus director.

“Under the leadership of John and Wynell, the Phelps family has been an invaluable asset to the San Jacinto College Foundation for as long as I can remember,” added Watson. “As one of the main fund raising events for the Foundation at our annual golf tournament, I personally have seen the Phelps family purchase, pick up and deliver major auction items the night before the event to be sure the Foundation had attractive items for bidding. Whatever the need has been, John, Wynell, Kenny and Steve have always been there for us.”
