San Jacinto College Testing Centers offer testing for students to attain college credit for what they already know through College Board's College Level Examination Program (CLEP).

You can test for any of the 34 introductory-level subject exams to earn credit toward your degree; however, most colleges and institutions only award credit for certain exams. Confirm your college or institution's CLEP testing policy before attempting to test.

San Jac awards credit for 20 of the available exams (see the table below), and an advisor can help you determine how CLEP testing can help you complete your degree.

To have credit applied:

  • You must earn at least three credit hours of coursework at San Jac before CLEP credit can be posted to your transcript.
  • You cannot earn more than 30 credit hours toward a degree from CLEP in combination with other credit by examination scores.
  • You will not receive CLEP credit for a course you previously earned a grade for (A, B, C, D, F, FX, W, WL, or I).

*If you score between 50-62 on any language exam, San Jac will award 8 credit hours for 1411 and 1412 courses. If you score 63+ on any language exam, San Jac will award an additional 6 hours for 2311 and 2312 courses.

You should visit the CLEP website to find more information about the available exams and learn eligibility and registration guidelines. When ready, you can purchase your registration ticket through CLEP.

When you register, you can choose where to send your scores. You should meet with your chosen college or institution to discuss your official scores and how they can be applied for college credit. If you choose to have your scores sent to San Jac, in most cases after testing you can meet with an advisor to review your unofficial scores.

If you are eligible to receive testing accommodations, you need to confirm what accommodations CLEP can provide. Please also meet with Accessibility Services to ensure you receive the appropriate accommodations San Jac can provide and learn how they can apply to this exam.

Each CLEP exam allows 90 minutes to finish, with additional time if you take an optional essay section. You can take breaks, but you cannot pause the exam and must finish within the allowed time limit.

When you're ready to test, be sure to have:

  • Your government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.)
  • Your CLEP registration ticket (must match your ID)
  • $20 for the testing fee ($10 additional if taking an optional essay)

If you need to retest, CLEP allows retesting on the same exam after a three-month period. Confirm your eligibility with CLEP before attempting to retest.

Modern States Education Alliance offers free online courses to help you prepare for the test and may cover your CLEP registration ticket fee as well.

CLEP exams are now being offered at our GENERATION PARK CAMPUS!

If you would like to schedule your CLEP exam at the GENERATION PARK CAMPUSplease send an email with your name and phone number to testingcenter-genpark@sjcd.edu and we will contact you to schedule an appointment.
