Recommended: Unlicensed Engine Department members should have a minimum of 180 days of service as a wiper or equivalent to qualify for any QMED training.

QMED-Oiler is a 17-day USCG & STCW approved course intended to satisfy the professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for a national rating endorsement as QMED-Oiler.  This course complies with the requirements of Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Chapter A-III/5 mandatory minimum standard of competence for ratings as able seafarer engine in a manned engine-room or designated to perform duties in a periodically unmanned engine-room.  This training satisfies the requirements for the General Safety, and Oiler examination modules. The course includes a hands-on practical and a classroom lecture portion for theory and familiarization

Any applicant who has successfully completed the QMED-Oiler (SANJCC – 387) course within 1 year of application will satisfy the professional examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.501(c)(5) for a national rating endorsement as QMED-Oiler.  AND satisfy the following specific assessment tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines for Able Seafarer-Engine (NVIC 18-14), PROVIDED that the applicant was endorsed with the rating of RFPEW prior to starting this course: Tasks No. 3.1.A   through 10.9.A,

Applicants are not required to present completed Task Control sheets in application for an STCW endorsement.
