Instructional Modalities

San Jacinto College offers courses in the following instructional modalities:

  • Face-to-face: All instruction occurs with students and faculty at the same San Jacinto College-approved instructional location.
  • Web-enhanced: Content delivered through a combination of web-based and classroom activities. These courses use components of computer instruction using the College’s learning management system, Blackboard, in addition to multimedia activities and classroom time. On-campus classroom time is required not less than 66% and not more than 75% of instructional time. All other instructional time will be conducted online.
  • Hybrid: Content delivered through a combination of web-based and classroom activities. These courses use components of computer instruction using the College’s learning management system, Blackboard, in addition to multimedia activities and classroom time. On-campus classroom time is required not less than 15% and not more than 49% of instruction time. All other instructional time will be conducted online.
  • Online: All content is delivered through computers and multimedia using the College’s learning management system, Blackboard, and may include various media or publisher content; both synchronous and asynchronous teaching methods may be used as appropriate. No on-campus testing or activities may be required. Proctored exams may be required but faculty must provide options outside of San Jacinto College locations.

Altered Operations Instructional Modalities

San Jacinto College may offer courses in the following instructional modalities during altered operations:

  • ONLINE Anytime: All content is delivered through computers and multimedia using the College’s learning management system, Blackboard, and may include various media or publisher content. No on-campus testing or activities may be required. Proctored exams may be required but faculty must provide options outside of San Jacinto College locations.
  • ONLINE On a Schedule: All coursework will be completed online, but the lectures and virtual instruction will happen at specific times on certain days, just like in a typical face-to-face course.
  • Hands-On HYBRID: All content is delivered through computers and multimedia using the College’s learning management system, Blackboard, and may include various media or publisher content; both synchronous and asynchronous teaching methods may be used as appropriate. Proctored exams may be required but faculty must provide options outside of San Jacinto College locations.
  • FLEX Campus: This unique option will allow students to spend some time in the classroom with the instructor, in addition to online learning. On most weeks, a small group of students in each class will have the option to attend in person while the remaining students access coursework online. The small groups will rotate so all students in a class have multiple chances to attend in person, although it is never required that students attend in person.
  • Minimum Presence and Instructional Tools

Blackboard Learn is the course management system used to support all courses at San Jacinto College. Users can login to Blackboard at http://online.sanjac.edu/.

The Blackboard system allows faculty to make course content and materials available, conduct online discussions, deliver online exams, and much more. At a minimum, all College Blackboard course sites must meet the minimum presence expectations. This includes:

  • faculty contact information,
  • course syllabus,
  • collection of general education outcome assignments, and
  • active use of the Blackboard Grade Center, including final grade submission.

Distance Learning courses must meet the additional requirements as outlined in the distance learning definitions. The College creates a course shell for all courses to help faculty establish the minimum presence. Training aligned to meeting the Blackboard minimum presence expectations is available for faculty in the Cornerstone system. This includes:

  • BKBD 9081 - Blackboard: Getting Started
  • BKBD 9084 - Blackboard: Setting Up the Grade Center
  • BKBD 9086 - Blackboard: Communication Tools
  • BKBD 9095 - Blackboard: Using the Grade Center
  • BKBD 9096 - Blackboard: Submitting Final Grades
